Ecommerce Rant - You can have too much packaging!:

How many times has this happened to you?

You order something that you KNOW will fit through your letterbox but the company decided to send it in a massive box. And if you’re out, you’re gonna have to take the trip to the depot to collect it.

Cost of petrol and the time wasted to do this all adds up so buying online isn’t any cheaper than the high street. Not cool!

One of the big things I do at The Little Cobbler is to ensure that the minimum of packaging is used while keeping the contents safe. It’s not rocket science.

Postboxes in the UK are pretty much a standard size… the same size as a Pillarbox. The rule of thumb is that if it fits in a Pillarbox, it will fit a person’s postbox! Sending ‘air space’ in a package isn’t efficient so tight packaging is just something you should be doing anyway.

Not only that but I believe that the amount of waste you have to throw away is ridiculous too! I was sent a box containing tons of shredded paper - nice reuse of waste however, it was totally unnecessary because I’d purchased stick on soles… made of rubber… yeah, they’re pretty tough… funny hey?!

To sum up this rant - there’s a whole load more that online businesses can be doing to make their packaging smaller and more intelligently packed. Keeping the whole process ‘lean and green’ is a responsibility that all businesses should be doing.

The War on Throw Away Fashion - 700+ Pairs of Shoes Saved!

I have huge pleasure in letting you into a little secret… As of yesterday, there have been over 700 pairs of shoes saved because of www.thelittlecobbler.com and www.highheeltips.co.uk

The ‘War Against Throw Away Fashion’ has begun and to be honest, I had no idea it was going to have an impact so quickly! High heel tips, shoe repair glue and stick on soles have all gone to people wanting to save money, save time and save their shoes and I’m glad to have helped.

There’s a long way to go. There are still people questioning why I’m doing this or they don’t get it but I can safely say, I’m not giving up. I can’t justify in throwing away a perfectly good pair of shoes if they can be saved and I believe there are more people out there that think the same way. Even if you’ll never wear them, repair them and give them to charity, someone will be grateful.

So with that in mind…

Seriously folks, what are we gonna get over the fact that your body requires high quality fuel and eating less fuel makes you ill!?

A Ferrari needs good quality fuel, not two stroke and certainly not only a gallon a day if you’re in the Le Mans. You need to give it 99 Ron fuel and loads of it so it performs. Go Google it, it’s the best fuel you can put in your car.

1. Eating a little bit gives your body something to worry about. Starvation mode. Your body starts shutting down, your brain suffers and you end up running out of will power to keep your diet up then you binge on low quality, high fat and sugary food.

2. Eating crap gives you the same result. Your brain suffers, your skin suffers, your blood sugar goes mental and you end up with the same result… you continually reach for the crap until you go cold turkey then you’re really screwed. Binge time cos of sugar headaches.

* My advice - know your fuel.
Know how food works with your body. Take a bacon sarnie - The white bread is bad but the bacon inside it is protein ie. good for you. I’m not talking about calories either, they’re a myth and another blog post. I’m talking about food composition. If you put crap in, you get crap out. Changing your food input will eventually change your body composition. More muscle, less fat. Better fuel means less reliance on sugar as fuel. It becomes a positive feedback loop. Eventually, you’ll eat a McD’s and feel as rank as I did last week.

And not only that… if you add muscle, your body GETS BETTER at using fuel. Yey, you can eat more of the good stuff!

So…
Start small, try to point out what on your plate is fat, protein and carbs. Learning just a small amount about food gives you a huge benefit in understanding what is fuel and what is crap. Much of our food education comes from our Parents and with their best intentions, they only had the Government and Food Companies to give them information so we ate Spam and Waffles. We now have the Interweb so go and Google

All these have articles on eating good fuel and myfitnesspal.com gives you a breakdown of what you’re eating in terms of fat/protein/carbs. It’s a real eye opener.

Again, start small, learn the basics and eat smart.

… as a Airport Express speaker as my old one died. So now I can stream stuff from my laptop, through my mixer and out my speakers on my stesh.

My decks are now in my lounge and the acoustics sound great up against the massive thick wall of the lift. It’s like a mini studio :D

Knowing the Future

For Cherry - Chin up old girl, you’ll get there sooner than you think.

You want something to happen but you’re not sure about how to do it. You’re kinda moving in the right direction but it’s not quick enough. You know it’s gonna take hard work to get there and right now, you’re too tired to take one more step.

I could be talking about losing weight, getting fit, getting that gig, moving house or changing your life but the one thing that is certain about all of these…

If you know it will happen then it will happen.

Back in 2001-ish, I got restless. I was living the suburban lifestyle that was expected of me. Little house, little town, little job, nice boyfriend, nice friends and a nice little car. Everything that I should have been happy with… you know what I’m gonna say here don’t you? Yep, I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t cut out to do this. I didn’t want to live and die in the town I grew up in. I hated it. No really, I hated it big time.

At the time, I had no idea about what to do but then again I knew something wasn’t right. There was a thought, a niggly thought, that popped up once in a while, usually on a Sunday when we were trying to decide how to spend our hard earned cash at a retail park and preparing for another week of our nice little jobs.

Don’t get me wrong, I was incredibly grateful for what I had. I had a proper house, a car, a job and my health… except I had more to give. The world past the A19 was calling me and I couldn’t ignore it. The pain turned physical - stress, anxiety, sleepless nights all wrapped around pushing for something I had no idea what it was or looked like but I could feel it. It was FREEDOM.

Enough. I walked out that job, I started a chain of events that lead me to get a Masters, sell my house (and my car), buy a BMX, I get a new, carefree job, I start a clothing company, I get some new friends, I travel most weekends to BMX jams, I get hilariously drunk with my heros, I fall in love and I move the hell out of my hometown. All the while I KNEW it was going to happen. I KNEW I was going to cause a ruckus by rejecting my old life, I KNEW I was going somewhere else for my own happiness. The journey felt like freedom.

Knowing gives you comfort. Knowing that every day you have the thought in your mind, you’re pushing towards where you want to go. There isn’t a sign to show you but you know with all your being that it will happen.
