I work in a software company where all the managers have blackberries. It seems to be the company norm that when they are invited to a meeting the first thing they do is sit down and start checking their email. Nothing like sitting in a presentation by the VP (or CEO) and having the director behind you checking his email throughout (with it clicking each time he moves to the next line on the screen).
It’s nice to know I’m not old fashioned. Phones/email are there for your convenience. When I meet with someone I don’t look at, glance at, answer, or use my phone. If I know an emergency is in the works I’ll tell the person I’m meeting with that I’m expecting a call and might have to take it. If someone calls and it is not the emergency I ignore it. Same with email.
When you meet with someone you should be “present”. I call it manners.
